The aepyornis was one of the largest flightless birds ever to have existed on earth; endemic to Madagascar, it was hunted for its plumage, its flesh and its eggs, to the point of extinction. The hunters in the painting wear arabesque garments: contacts between Arabs and the Malagasy royal dynasties were in fact frequent.
